Nina's decision to step down

NICHOLS
I really wanted to weigh in on Nina Nichols decision to not run for an At-Large seat on the Troy City Council this summer and since a couple commenters mentioned her name, I will do so now.

I would have liked to have seen her run. I think she worked hard while on the Council, her heart was in the right place and she tried to do some things she thought was good for the city. I didn’t agree with all of those things – in particular pushing the police commissioner – but I’m not an elected representative either.

Sure, she likely had her eye on becoming mayor one day, but having ambitions is not a bad thing either. Makes you work harder at what you are doing now.

We all know – or think we know – why she decided to step down. Her official statement included something to do with “personal reasons.” Well, whatever they are should remain between herself and her family; especially after she decided not to run. And even if she did run, family stuff is family stuff and should be off limits to any sort of attacks from political opponents or hack columnists. Whatever she did certainly didn’t impact her ability to serve on the council but it was her decision to step down and so be it.

OK … OK … I’ll admit it. I wanted to see her run again because she did shake things up and I got a ton of mileage out of the whole police commissioner thing.

  2. I like Nina and always have. I don't always agree with her, but I feel that she means well for Troy. No one is ever going to agree on all points with a politician. That does not make them bad.

I agree that what ever personal reasons that Nina decided not to run are no one's business. It was a family issue and the public should have stayed out of it. I heard that the Church organization sent out a letter to all the church members saying that she was let go because of adultery. I find that a very UN-Christain like thing to do. If I was a member of that church I would have resigned my membership immediately. The church is supposed to be extolling the teachings of Jesus, the Christ, and he certainly would not have acted in such a judgmental and cheap manner. Let those without sin cast the first stone. Actions like these are exactly why churches of all religions have lost so many members and are now struggling to remain opened.

I like Adam Sanzone, but I thought that his reporting of it in The Record was gutter journalism.

    1. I agree, it was mudslinging at its worst and an the people who leaked the information succeeded in getting her out of office. I don't condone what she did, but she is only human and more people have affairs than you can shake a stick at, especially those in politics. The article was written purely for political retribution! Its one of the reasons I do not respect the Record at all nor do I find it to be a credible source of information, all that article did was turn it into a tabloid.

  4. Unfortunately she's not relevant anymore so she need not be discussed. Next up the Teta Sullivan circus. Where can I put odds down on her first inappropriate comment in a public forum. You think rob ford was out of control.

  6. Cheating is rampant in society among married people and people who are supposed to be in exclusive relationships. I am not making excuses for them. Adultery is serious, and I don't like it either. But I also don't like the holier than thou attitudes that come out of people when things like this happen.

  10. Jim, I must admit to having been judgemental about your columns at the Record, not that you require my good opinion. There seems to be something more insightful emerging in your observations. Age, experience...I don't know where its coming from, but it's refreshing and appreciated.

    1. You mean the former mouthpiece for Lou?--He was a much better rep for the city than anyone I can remember. Never once did he expose himself at the wine bar either.

    2. Yeah let's insult Frazier. Competent and classy I can see where he didn't fit in with this circus. Heard a rumor Mark Mcgrath asked Frazier to be his deputy mayor.
