Peggy Kownack is running for Troy City Council.

KOWNACK
Longtime activist Peggy Kownack is throwing her hat in the ring for an At Large seat on the Troy City Council.
“I've submitted my resume for consideration as a candidate for Troy City Council At-Large to the Democratic Party and am waiting for an interview to be scheduled,” said Kownack, who is a regular attendee – and vocal participant - in nearly every Council meeting.
She said she was also contacted by people in the Working Families Party to run on their line as well.
Kownack is involved in a number of civic organizations and activities, most notably breathing new life into the Troy Central Little League.
While Kownack is a longtime enrolled Democrat, the fact the WFP approached her too is telling.
Council President Rodney Wiltshire announced he is running to replace Mayor Lou Rosamilia, who opted not to seek a second term, but he does not have the blessing of the Democratic Party proper, namely Chairman Tom Wade. He does, though, have strong support within the WFP.
WILTSHIRE
Wiltshire said he too will send a resume and interview in front of the Democratic Party committee. There are some Wade Dem – I call them “Wade Dems” for the sake of clarity - names out there like Legislators Ed Manny and Cindy Doran, but no one other than Wiltshire has formally announced. Wade and Wiltshire, during individual appearances on TALK1300 said they are each prepared to primary.
While the mayor’s race will get most of the headlines – especially this year when there is a good chance of a GOP primary as well – all nine Council seats are also up for grabs.

Right now, on paper, the Democrats have a 7-2 majority. But, the real majority is an odd coalition of four Democrats – Wiltshire Dems - and two Republicans with three Democrats who remain loyal to the party left out of most, if not all, of the decision making.
WADE
It will be interesting if Wiltshire and the WFP can fill an entire slate to run against Wade Dem candidates or if they will target only certain seats.
Unlike Wiltshire, the other two At Large councilmembers – Lynn Kopka and Erin Sullivan-Teta – are Wade Democrats and it’s unclear if they will run again, if the Wiltshire Democrats will put up two more candidates or who the GOP will get to run for the three seats. It’s also not known if the Democrats will put up a third candidate to join Kopka and Sullivan-Teta on the ticket.
(As an aside, Kownack might be running with the Wiltshire Dems but she is far from likely to toe anyone’s line. We'll talk to her about it this Saturday on Talk1300.)
BODNAR
Here is a cursory look at the rest of the Council:
-In District 1, Councilman Jim Gordon, a Republican, has all but announced his intention to run for mayor - he is even holding a fundraiser on April 21. While it might be the only GOP stronghold in the city, people in the ‘Burgh will cross party lines for the right candidate.
-In District 2, Councilwoman Anastasia Robertson, a Democrat, is in Wiltshire’s camp and former Councilman Mark McGrath, an enrolled Conservative who ran with GOP support, is likely to run for his old seat. It’s not clear if the Wade Democrats will challenge Robertson.
DOHERTY
-In District 3 incumbent Dean Bodnar, a Republican, has two more years before he is term limited out. Bodnar is a Republican but he is more independent than a party loyalist. With chaos running rampant across the ballot this year, it would not be a surprise if everyone just leaves Bodnar alone and focuses their fight in other areas.
-In District 4, Councilman Bob Doherty, a Democrat, is squarely in the Wiltshire camp. The district heavily favors Democrats so it will be interesting to see who the Wade Dems put up.
-In District 5, Councilman Ken Zalewski is term limited out. He is one of Wiltshire’s biggest supporters but all three factions – Wade Dems, Wiltshire Dems and the GOP – have a shot at this district.
-In District 6, Councilman Gary Galuski is also term limited out. He is a staunch Wade Dem but like District 5 it’s a toss-up.
One sure is it’s going to be a fun year in the Collar City.

  2. Whoever runs it is hoped that they truly have a real grasp on the economic issues that face this city. The padding for overtime which ultimately drives up pension costs born by the city for years, the deficit that needs to be reduced, the alleged corruption on King Street "emergency tear downs". Leave term limits in place, have residency requirements for city employees and enforce it, figure out a way to get cash flow from tax exempts that make up the city and please - no more low income housing. We cannot afford the problems that come with it. Let the Troy Police Department do their job and stop with the quick knee jerk reaction that it is the cops fault. By the way, what about the shooting that did happen in Kokopelli's ? Anything going on there ?

  5. Why does it take a village to manage the dwindling population in the city of Troy? The city has a blight of burned out buildings, foreclosed vacant buildings, collapsing water mains, etc. Wouldn't it be better to put a real leader in Administration, eliminate the city council jobs at $14,000 a position and use that money to fix what is wrong in the city?

  6. Just when you thought the city council couldn't get scarier... it looks like it could.

  13. Wow what a fire in South Troy, nice to see the Mayor concerned about the residents...apparently he feels differently about residents in the south end. Did you notice Chief Garrett said he felt the buildings could be salvaged. That's good news after seeing what horrible condition the buildings on King St were in when they had to be demolished immediately!

    1. Lynn Kopka did a nice job of quickly organizing help for the displaced families. She took control and was assisted by Mayor Lou, Gordon and Teta. Only in Troy could a disaster like this bring about ugly politics.Councilman Zalewski was also at the fire but Rodney was not.In Ken's zeal to get his guy Rodney elected he went to facebook thanking Rodney for being there and all his help. He was n't there. Is there no shame?

  14. Kownack is a life long resident of Troy, who genuinely cares about the people and the city. Donates hundreds of hours annually to a multitude of cleanup projects geared towards the lower income communities. Kownack didn't just start these activities recently, as long as there was trash on the sidewalks; overgrown grass and weeds, collapsed dams, vandalized cemeteries or forgotten baseball fields, Margaret has been there to clean up the mess. Troy is a disaster area right now and only a handful of officials admit it. Kownack is Troy, she eats, sleeps and breaths Troy. people like Kownack are the reason cities turn around. I personaly hope that the people she fights for are willing to fight for her.

      Delete
    5. Yes the REAL problems. Lets start with some small problems like cleaning up Troy's properties shall we. How about her constant attendence and support at ZB meetings blathering on about the proposed Cox junkyard across from the Snowman and next to a daycare. All of Troy should have a replica of that dump on River Street. And that splendid burned out parcel on 112TH owned by the Cox family is also a real welcome when entering Troy's north end. Don't know where she came from but please take her back.

  22. Remember that Rodney chose to be absent from two budget votes two years in a row as his vacation was more important than his paid obligation to be at the meeting to vote. He had no problem taking the money to be there, but clearly was on a planned vacation when it was time to vote. His priority and his clear colors were demonstrated.

Carmella once the darling of Kathy Jimino's republcan machine has evidently had a falling out. Kathy has told her employee and Troy City Repub chairman Wojcik that Carmella's three previous loses were enough.Carmella, undeterred and with the aid of Dworsky and the disturbed Amy O have labeled Wojcik, McCashion and any and all republican candidates as misogynists, racists, children haters, animal haters....well you get the picture, true victims. To sum this all up this battle is raging on twitter, facebook and press releases, and yes these are middle aged men and women who have the disre and profess to have the ability to run the city of Troy.
